Navy: The New Neutral

Navy: The New Neutral

Navy is the new black.

Navy is a great color that is easy to use as a flexible neutral.  It can appear to be smart, classic or coastal depending on how you pair it.

For those who love blue, using navy on permanent features such as cabinetry is a brave option.  Navy cabinetry is a current trend that many are embracing in their kitchens, baths and bar cabinetry.

On an island, navy is both a showpiece and an anchor.  The kitchen below uses a navy cabinet to pull out navy highlights in the unique two-toned hardwood stain and blue flecks in the granite within the same room.

In a bathroom, navy can be a fun alternative to stained cabinetry or painted white cabinets.  The bathroom below uses a navy cabinet against very neutral countertop for a pop of color and contrast.

For a less permanent way to incorporate navy blue in your home, navy blue paint like Benjamin Moore Halve Navy HC-154 is a designer favorite for being a true, classic navy blue.

Dark colors add a smart feel to a study, offering a feel of sophistication.  In a Study, navy blue paint with bright white trim creates a clean, modern feel or paired with stained trim produces a more traditional feel.

Navy works well in small spaces like powder rooms and can actually make small spaces feel bigger by visually eliminating corners.  It can also be paired with a half wall of bead board like the photo below to balance the dark paint for those wanting to keep some brightness in the room.  Pair with a half wall of shiplap instead of bead board for contemporary flair.

The same paint color works well on a front door as a welcoming entrance, not likely to go out of style anytime soon.
