Tips to help prepare your home for Winter

Tips to help prepare your home for Winter

December 9, 2019

Here are some winterizing tips to ensure you spend the winter nice and warm and your house is ready for the colder weather!

At Logan Homes, we strive to embrace cutting edge technology and best practices to minimize environmental impact and maximize energy efficiency. Every Logan Home that we build scores a 70 or better on the HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Index. That's a 30 point advantage over the average new home and a 60 point advantage over existing homes. The HERS rating for us represents our commitment to our buyers through low energy bills and to the environment through energy efficiency. When you choose to build with Logan, you are selecting the very best in quality and energy-saving technology. Here are tips we suggest to help protect your home this winter!

Protect the Pipes. To avoid frozen pipes, keep a stream of water running in the house when temperatures drop below "20° F."

Reverse the Ceiling Fans. Ceiling Fans are fantastic in the summer heat, but they are useful in the winter too! Running the fan counterclockwise at a low speed during the colder months spreads the warm air trapped on the ceiling evenly around the house.

Time to Get Outside To Clean The Gutters. Find a warm day to clean the gutters and trim the branches. Cleaning the gutters prevents ice from building on the roof, and removing weak branches will reduce the chance of property damage during storms.

Change Your Thermostat. Are you going to be gone for a few days, or are you spending the night out? Programmable thermostats allow you to control your home's heat remotely and even schedule lower temperatures for when you're out of the house to save money on your energy bill. That's why we install a smart thermostat in every home that we build.

Check the Weatherstripping. Weatherstripping around windows and doors is essential to trapping that warm air inside, but during the summer, it's prone to dry out. Make sure all your weatherstripping is doing their job and keeping your home nice and warm.

Replace Air Filters. This is a good tip for any part of the year. Replacing your home's air filters will significantly improve the efficiency and longevity of your HVAC system.

BONUS TIP:  Don't forget about the plants! As a good rule, if the temperature's under 45 degrees, it's a good idea to bring the plants indoors if you can.
