Our Top Tips for Moving During the Winter Months
January 19, 2023
Moving into a new home is always an exciting time, but when you find yourself moving during the winter months, you’ll certainly see a few more challenges that come your way. With the possibility of cold weather, snow and ice, the moving process can become slightly more difficult—but with some planning and plenty of preparation, you can make your move as smooth as possible. At Logan Homes, our team has been in the business since 1986, and throughout that time, we’ve picked up some of the best tips in order to help you navigate your winter move.
Plan ahead
One of the most important things you can do when moving during the winter is to plan ahead. Make sure to schedule your move well in advance so you have plenty of time to prepare as this will also give you the opportunity to look into a variety of moving companies and book a reputable one that has experience with winter moves.
Stay organized
Moving can be overwhelming, but taking the time to stay organized can help make the process a little bit easier. Create a moving checklist and make sure you have all of the necessary supplies, such as boxes, tape and bubble wrap, and make sure that you pack your items carefully and label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in.
Dress warmly
This might be a given anytime during the winter months, but you’ll want to ensure that you dress warmly when you’re moving into your new home during the winter. Wear layers so you can easily adjust to the temperature changes inside and outside of your home.
Protect your floors
To protect your floors from scratching or from outside dirt, place mats, carpet runners, old blankets or even rugs on the floor of your new home as this will help to catch any snow or ice that is tracked in and keep your floors clean and dry throughout the entire move.
Keep your valuables safe
During the moving process, it’s important to keep your valuables safe from the winter weather. Make sure to pack them in a secure, waterproof container or keep them with you at all times. This will ensure that they are protected from the elements and will not be lost or damaged during the move.
Be prepared for inclement weather
Winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be prepared for any type of weather and to make sure you have a plan in place if there are any snowstorms or icy roads possible. This could include having a backup plan for transportation, such as renting a truck or hiring a moving company with four-wheel drive vehicles.
Unpack the essentials
After you move in, don’t feel rushed to get everything done in one day. Take your time, focus on unpacking your essential items and make sure everything is in its proper place. Remember, moving is a process, and it’s important to take it one step at a time.
